Streamlined Apprenticeship Services

The MVRO has achieved our goal of streamlining the skilled trades system for apprentices and auto retailers.

Starting April 2, 2025, Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) will serve as the first point of contact for apprenticeship registration, certifying exams, and the issuance of Certificates of Apprenticeship. This responsibility is being transferred from the Ministry of Labour. We believe having a dedicated agency focussed on the skilled trades only – rather than a Ministry responsible a multitude of other legislation and regulations – serves the industry and apprentices best.

This fantastic achievement was the result of focussed and persistent advocacy which included multiple meetings with Premier Doug Ford and Labour Minister David Piccini. They have listened to our concerns and acted decisively to ensure apprentices and the skilled trades are at the centre of decision making.

This transfer of responsibility will greatly compliment the MVRO’s International Technician Recruitment program. Now, STO is the one stop shop responsible for processing applications and responding to the needs of applicants and employers in a more efficient manner.

Eligible exam candidates can begin scheduling exams for dates on or after April 2nd through STO starting in March 2025. While some specialized programs will remain with the Ministry, this shift represents a major milestone in simplifying and enhancing the apprenticeship experience.

Until April 2nd, operations with the Ministry will continue as usual. For any questions, please contact Skilled Trades Ontario directly at 647-847-3000 or 1-855-299-0028. We are confident this move will significantly benefit our members and their apprentices to cut red tape and make it easier to find the next generation of auto technicians.
