The following is a Statement by Frank Notte, Director of Government Relations:
“For the vast majority of Ontarians, the family car is a necessity to run their household. By extending the 5.7 cents per litre tax cut on gasoline until December 31, 2024 in Budget 2024, Minister Bethlenfalvy is delivering real relief to drivers and businesses like auto retailers who use gasoline as an input cost. Since the gas tax was cut two and a half years ago, Ontario households have saved an average of $320.
According to Statistics Canada, transportation costs make up nearly 20 per cent of the household budget. In today’s high inflation environment, an extended gasoline tax cut is a meaningful way to lower the cost of vehicle ownership for families and lower the cost of doing business for new car and truck retailers.
This gas tax relief comes on the heels of other meaningful cost reductions Premier Ford has implemented to reduce the cost of vehicle ownership including:
- Savings vehicle owners $1.1 billion per year by refunding licence plate renewal fees and stickers.
- Permanently freezing driver’s licence and photo card fees, saving drivers an estimated $66 million over the next five years; and
- Scrapping the costly and ineffective Drive Clean Program saving taxpayers over $40 million per year.
There is no doubt about it – Doug Ford is the most pro-auto Premier in Ontario’s history.”
